Most “free” password manager tiers are trials in disguise — capped at a handful of passwords or a single device. A few genuinely stay free indefinitely. Here’s what to expect from each.
Bitwarden: unlimited, forever
Bitwarden’s free plan has no password cap and no device limit — a rarity in this category, and the reason it tops our best free password manager list.
NordPass and LastPass: one device
Both stay free indefinitely but restrict you to a single device (NordPass) or a single device type (LastPass — all-mobile or all-desktop, not both).
Dashlane: 25 passwords, one device
Dashlane’s free tier is the most restrictive of the group — workable for very light use, but closer to an extended trial than a durable free plan.
What about 1Password?
1Password offers no permanent free tier for individuals, only a free trial. See the full rating for how all five compare on price alongside security and features.
