LastPass vs Dashlane

LastPass and Dashlane sit in the same price range and both trace back to established, mainstream password managers — but a 2022 security incident puts them on different footing today.

Trust and security history

LastPass disclosed a 2022 breach in which attackers copied encrypted customer vault backups from a cloud storage environment. Master passwords weren’t exposed directly, but the incident remains a mark against the product. Dashlane has no publicly disclosed breaches and layers dark-web monitoring on top of its zero-knowledge AES-256 encryption.

Features

Dashlane bundles a VPN into its paid plans, something LastPass doesn’t offer. Both support sharing and family plans; LastPass’s free plan is now limited to a single device type, and Dashlane’s free tier caps at 25 passwords on one device.

Platforms

LastPass supports more platforms overall, including Linux via its browser extension pathway more consistently than Dashlane, which currently ships no native Linux desktop app.

Our verdict

Dashlane is the stronger pick today given LastPass's breach history, especially if the bundled VPN has value to you. LastPass remains functional and feature-rich if you've already rotated your master password since 2022 and enabled MFA.
