Bitwarden review: is the top-rated free password manager worth it?

admin ·August 18, 2026 ·1 min read

Bitwarden is the highest-scoring password manager on Secure Password Vault at 9.4/10, and the reasoning comes down to three things: genuinely free unlimited-device access, fully open-source code, and independent audits on top of that.

What makes it different

Unlike most “freemium” password managers, Bitwarden’s free plan has no password cap and no device limit. Its client and server code are published openly, so its cryptography has been reviewed publicly — not just by a paid auditor.

Where it falls short

The interface, while improved in recent updates, is still less visually polished than 1Password or Dashlane, and advanced security reports are gated behind the Premium tier ($10/year).

Should you use it?

For nearly everyone, yes. See the full Bitwarden review for the complete pricing, security, and platform breakdown, or see how it stacks up in Bitwarden vs NordPass.
