Methodology

Every service on Secure Password Vault is tested by hand across five weighted criteria. Scores are re-checked whenever a vendor ships a major change or a security incident is disclosed.

01. Security (35%)

Encryption standard, independent audit history, breach track record and available second factors (TOTP, hardware keys, passkeys). A disclosed breach caps the maximum score regardless of other strengths.

02. Price (25%)

What a genuinely useful free tier includes, and whether paid plans are competitive per user for individuals and families.

03. Platform coverage (20%)

Native apps and browser extensions across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and major browsers, plus self-hosting where offered.

04. Everyday features (15%)

Autofill reliability, sharing and family/team vaults, breach monitoring, and any bundled extras like VPN.

05. Trust & transparency (5%)

Open-source code, published audit reports, and clear communication after past incidents.
